In 2000 nearly one billion people or 26% of the adult population worldwide had hypertension

What is Hypertension?
This is a chronic condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is elevated. This increase in blood pressure forces the heart work more intensively than usual to circulate blood in the vessels.

Symptoms

• Headaches (especially in the back of the head and in the morning hours)
• Dizziness
• Vertigo
• tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears)
• visual disturbances
• fainting episodes

Other non-specific symptoms that can be associated with elevated blood pressure are dizziness, palpitations, easy fatigue and disability; however, these are not stable and not confirmed by studies.

How is hypertension treated
• Reduced salt intake
• Increased consumption of fruits and products with low fat content
• Exercise, weight loss and reduced alcohol intake also help to decrease high blood pressure
• The potential role of other factors such as stress and caffeine

The most common cause of hypertension, on a secondary base, is the renal disease. Finally obesity, sleep apnea, pregnancy, aortic coarctation, excessive licorice consumption and certain prescription medication, herbal medicines and drugs.

Hypertension diagnosis:
• Complete medical history and clinical examination to confirm the diagnosis
• Search other cardiovascular risk factors
• Search the existence of secondary causes of hypertension
• Detection of hypertension effects on the cardiovascular system and other coexisting disorders
• Evaluation on the patient lifestyle in terms of hypertension and determination of the need for intervention.
Hypertension Complications
Worldwide, hypertension is the most predictable risk agent of premature death.
It increases the risk of ischemic heart disease, strokes, peripheral vascular disease, and other cardiovascular diseases, including: heart failure, aortic aneurysms, diffuse atherosclerosis and pulmonary embolism.
